How it works
What is hydroseeding?
Hydroseeding is a planting process that combines grass seed with a carrier, usually wood or paper fibre, plus fertiliser and a tackifier. Everything is mixed with water inside a hydroseeding machine, kept moving by mechanical agitation, then sprayed onto the ground as a slurry.
We recommend wood-fibre mulch because it holds moisture for longer than paper mulch, and that gives a better result. The seed sits at the ideal depth, the mulch seals in moisture and holds the soil in place, and together they act like a mini greenhouse.
Straight after application your site takes on a green tint from the mulch. Grass usually starts to appear in 5 to 7 days, depending on soil temperature and moisture.

Hydroseeding questions answered
What's the difference between hydroseeding and hydromulching?
They use the same equipment. Hydromulching uses a higher rate of quality wood-fibre mulch and tackifier, which gives more reliable results on demanding sites and fine lawns. Hydroseeding with less mulch is more economical for large, less critical areas. See our hydromulching page for more.
Do I need to bring in topsoil first?
Not always. On suitable sites we use ProGanics, a growing medium applied through the hydroseeder, so no imported soil is needed. We'll confirm what your site needs at the free site visit.
Will weeds come up in my new lawn?
The hydroseed mix itself is weed-free, but weed seed is almost always present in the soil and the water and fertiliser can bring it up. That's normal, and it's easily treated once the lawn is established. Our new lawn care guide explains what to do.
When is the best time of year to hydroseed?
Warm, moist conditions give the fastest germination, but we choose site-specific grass blends so we can sow 12 months of the year.
